Review Your Contract Before You Sign

Got a job offer, congratulations! Before you sign on the dotted line, you must review the employment contract carefully. Take your time when reviewing your contract, and make sure to read all the fine prints.

By the time you finish reading your contract, you should have no questions left unanswered. You should know exactly where and when you'll be working, your remuneration and holiday time, holiday pay, teaching hours, working hours, reimbursement details and accommodation details.

Your contract should include:

  • Your personal details

  • The school’s contact details

  • Title of the job to be performed

  • Start and end date of employment

  • Number of contact hours or classes you must teach

  • Work Visa application

  • Salary and tax

  • Accommodation arrangements

  • Medical insurance details

  • Holidays and paid leaves

  • Termination details.

If there is anything that sounds unreasonable in the contract, you can negotiate for it to be removed. Please remember to negotiate politely and respectfully. If a school thinks you are a good teacher and will be an asset to them, they will agree to any reasonable requests. The same applies if you do not understand anything written in the contract.
