Expected Salary and Additional Benefits

On average, the typical salary for English teachers in China is between R20,000 to R40,000 a month. The number one factor affecting your salary is teaching experience. If you have no previous teaching experience, you will most likely be on the lower spectrum of the salary range. However, as you build up your teaching experiences, your salary will start to increase rapidly. Experienced teachers can earn up to R70,000 per month.

Other factors are affecting your salary, namely the type of institution and the city you teach.

The following is an average range of salaries for different institutions.

  1. Private Education Centres: R20,000 - R40,000 per month

  2. Public Schools: R20,000 - R35,000 per month

  3. Universities: R15,000 - R30,000 per month

In China, cities are classed into different tiers. Tier Ones are an international metropolis. The lower the tier, the smaller and less developed a city gets. You are most likely to get a higher salary if you work in higher-tier cities than in lower ones. However, the higher salary is to compensate for the high living cost in the higher tier cities, and will not make much difference in your standard of living and the amount of money you can save.
